HELP! I accidently used self-rising flour, but ALSO added the baking soda and powder! Can someone help me?

September 4th, 2008

I am baking for a fundraiser and I really screwed something up. I made batter for pumpkin bread, but accidently used self rising flour- AND added the baking soda, powder and salt the recipe called for! Does anyone know how I can save the dough? Is it too messed up? Please-someone with experience- help me!

"Shall we pray?" Just kidding.
The only thing I can think of would be make one-half of the original recipe using all purpose powder, substitute some applesauce for some of the oil or shortening, but do not add any baking powder or baking soda.

Applesauce will help neutralize most of the bitter taste of the soda and powder.

Then fold that dough into what you have made now. You might add a little extra sugar or brown sugar to neutralize the extra soda.

Once this is accomplished bake as usual.

I think it will be fine. This way, you will have more bread to donate instead of none or one.

Hope this helps!

What word other than "self help" could be used to describe living a competitive proactive lifestyle?

September 3rd, 2008

I'm looking for information on how to be a better person. How I can work towards it. How I can rationalize my thoughts, and set a goal towards.

Hell, even a life basics book would help me out. Anything other than self help which makes a point of wording their books like you are in need of "help" and are thus pitiful.

um, if you buy a self help book, that's not self help:that's just help. Admitting you need help is not pitiful. You posted a question looking for help and I don't think you're pitiful.

My best friend is addicted to sex. She's showing risky and self destructive behaviour. How do I help her out??

September 2nd, 2008

My best friend is sex addict. She/s showing risky and self destructive behavior, like having casual sex, neglecting her family & friends and her job. She's being treated for depression. I feel very sorry and helpless. How do i help her out?

Simple fact sex is not the problem, addiction is.

Some people are addicted to drugs, others to alcahol, others to gambling, some to work and others to sex, etc.

Addiction itself is a disease to which we are all susceptible, and many of us have in one way or another succumbed to. The difference is that some things we become addicted to are dangerous, in more ways than one.

The biggest problem is that to be helped when you have an addiction, you must first recognise in yourself that you have a problem. You can't help someone who does not want help. That I can tell you from experience, I was the one with the addiction. Until I personally accepted that I had a problem, it didn't matter what anybody said, I didn't need help, because I didn't have a problem, that was my train of thought. I hit rock bottom, and realised I did need help.

If you try to convnce your friend that she needs help, do it gently, don't be pushy, or she will push you away. Point out to her that she seems to be having too much sex, that her family needs her, that her job is at risk. Let her know that you cae and that if she needs to talk, you'll be there and you won't judge her. And most importantly, Don't judge her.

She will in time notice by herself that there is an issue, offer her help in subtle ways, if she says she's going to go somewhere that you know she will have sex, take her to the movies, invite her round for dinner, and watch a dvd, take her to a theme park. Give her other things to spend her time doing, things that are less harmful to herself, and others.

Good luck

What are some actually useful self help books?

September 1st, 2008

I like reading these books but they almost always leave me disappointed. I'd rather read one of these though than go to a psychiatrist. Any suggestions? I don't care what topic, just self help books. I've got all kinds of problems. I don't want any religious self help books unless they are about how to free yourself from religious shackles or how to reverse the brain damage caused by Catholicism.

you know i just go to amazon.com and browse the section i'm interested in then read reviews from the consumers who read them. plus you can buy used books there for a bargain :). it totally depends on the subject. oprah also seems to recommend some good books. there are just soooo many self help books on the self you can get overwhelmed.

Im self employed, if I get sick or have an accident would I get help with my rent?

August 31st, 2008

I rent a 3 bed house. I'm self employed. Things are going fine at the moment, but my worry is that if I got sick or had an accident I wouldn't be able to pay the rent. Would I get any help ? Housing benefit/sickness benefit ?

It depends on how sick you are and the type of sickness. You might get some help from the government but it won't be enough to cover your big house. They only give you the basics to survive. Your insurance will only cover some of the expenses of your sickness. Sorry, but this world stinks. Only the lottery can save you.

What can I do when the GP just recomends self help?

August 30th, 2008

I am depressed. I have a stressful job, managing staff as well as the public, and I feel as though everything I do away from work is a mess. I live with my boyfriend of over 3yrs, and I consider our relationship to be happy. However, I feel alot of the time like I let him down and repulse him. I have very low self worth and I always wonder how somebody as great as him stays with me when he really could have anybody.

I cant get along with his family as they seem to be "the perfect family" and I feel as though they are wishing for the day that I`m not around to ruin their son`s life.

I guess I just feel as though I eek out an existance rather than appreciating life. Dont seem to have any more energy or interest in anything and I sometimes think that the world would be happier if I were not around. I feel at rock-bottom, completely pushed over the edge.

I cant continue like this. I have a problem. When I approached my GP, she just told me to read self-help books.
I might add that this is all taking stress on my health with various symptoms (heart palpitations, panic & anxiety attacks, migraines, low immunity, aching body etc) I fear that if I dont get help before I do something that harms me, my health (or lack of it) will get me there just as quick

Hi there,
im so sorry to hear you feel this way and you are suffering from depression, where low self esteem and confidence is part of it. I have a doctor who like you was very dismissive…but you have to change your doctor or go see another one at your surgery if you can do that. If not try looking for a local counselling session as this can greatly help, as they can teach you coping tecniques and help you vent some of that stress. Best of luck x

Can you help teens without lowering their self-esteem?

August 29th, 2008

I am starting a NPO and it is focused on helping teenagers with self-esteem and other issues…I also want to help teens with funds and clothing for high school events. How do I get teens to ask for help?

The key is to not "advertise" that they are getting help for clothing and funds. You should make them think they are working for what they earn instead of it being just a hand out. Kids can be so cruel these days. Even wearing a simple family hand-me-down gives the potential to get made fun of.
